The myth begins with a death of a beautiful young giant, Orion, and a great hunter who was a son of Neptune ( God of the sea). Tales of Orion’s prowess, strength, and manliness are legend.

One is Eos, who is goddess of the dawn fallin in love with him and carried him away with her. Diana, became jealous and commanded a scorpion to kill Orion.

Another myth is Orion tried to rape Diana, and she brought out a giant scorpion that stung Orion to death.

After Orion’s death, Jupiter placed both Orion and the scorpion among the stars.

Libra, the Scales

Libra is the seventh astrological sign, only one that is a symbol neither animal nor human. The scales represent balance and justice, harmony, and equilibrium.

It is also associated with the Harvest, like Virgo. In ancient times, grains and crops are weighed on scales after they are harvested. The most interesting thing is they are scales of judgment for the dead, where souls are weighed to see if they are good or bad.

Now, in the religion of the Egyptians, the scales of judgment were the sole province of the God Arubis , whom is the conductor of souls. He guided the dead through the underworld and made sure they were weighed fairly as possible. He was the master of balance. There is a painting that exists where it shows a judgment scene, and its called, “Papyrus of Ani”, dated round 1500 B.C.

Arubis is crunching by a large scale and weighs the heart of a dead person. There are two bowls: in one bowl, rests the heart; 2nd bowl, truth sits and is symbolized by a feather. In this representation, the scale is equally balanced. In the religion of Egyptians, the dead heart had to be in harmony with truth before it passes into after life.

Virgo, the Virgin

It is the sixth sign of the zodiac and second to have a human representation rather than an animal.

The Virgo Legend is found in the Greek mythology of creation. Before men or animals lived on Earth, Titans, which is a race of giants, who ruled the world.

Two titan brothers, Prometheus and Epimetheus, were given the task of creating humans and animals. When done, each was given different gifts, but when it came to mankind, Epimetheus needed his brother’s help so he asked. He went into heaven and gave the mankind gift of fire.

Because of this, Jupiter, chief of Gods, bound Prometheus to a rock on Mount Caucasus. His liver was consumed by an eagle. He sent a curse to Earth the first woman, Pandora. “A gift of all Gods.”

But with her was a box, which wasn’t to be opened and was by Pandora herself; out came plagues to haunt mankind forever, sickness and death.

(At the bottom of the box lay hope which never escaped!)

Leo, the Lion

Leo, the fifth sign of the zodiac, represented by the lion, “The King of Beasts”.

This mythology is based on the story of Hercules and the Nemean Lion. Hercules was the son of the great god Jupiter

and mortal woman, Alcmena.

Juno, who is Jupiter’s jealous wife because of his numerous love affairs, was dead set against Hercules since he was a baby.

When Hercules was a young man, he was bound to do 12 heroic and desperate undertakings, known as the 12 Labors of Hercules.

Now his first labor was to kill the Nemean Lion. He was not able to kill it with arrows but with his bare hands. He wrestled with it and the Nemean Lion was strangled to death. In the process, Hercules finger was bit off and Hercules got off lightly.

Cancer, The Crab

It’s the 4th sign sign of the zodiac, symbolized by a crab, This is a water creature which is also capable walking on land. it was placed  in the zodiac some 5 hundred years before Christ. The Chaldean gave the crab  the name of cancer because of the crab’s backward movement which appeared to represent the Sun’s movement upon reaching this sign.

when it reaches the sign of Cancer, it seems to remain stationary for a few days.

It begins the Summer’s Solstice and is the very Solstice which means” The Sun is Standing Still”.

According to Greek legend, Cancer is the giant crab which attacked the foot of Hercules while he was engaged in battle with the monstrous nine-headed serpent, Hydra.

The crab’s attack on Hercules was instigated by Juno, Jupiter’s jealous wife, who was set on Hercules destruction. Unfortunately, the Crab seated its doom, for Hercules crushed  it before proceeding to dispatch the Hydra. Because the Crab carried out Juno’s orders, it was placed amongst the heavens with other heroic symbols.

Taurus, the Bull

The bull is an animal that is both fierce, gentle, and symbolizes strength and sexuality.

The myth begins with Jupiter, supreme God of ancient Greece, ruler of heaven, of lesser gods, and men.

Jupiter had a strong romantic streak, and numerous love affairs, wives and mistresses. One such princess in particular is Europa, daughter of King of Phoenicia.

She led a very sheltered life and she had a prophetic dream where a woman held out her arms and said that Jupiter appointed her as his beloved.
